Qualitative Fit Testing: Fit Testing Annually for those employees who will be required to use an N95/Full/Half Face Mask. You must complete the OSHA Medical Evaluation Questionnaire. A respirator can not protect you if it doesn’t fit your face. It’s that simple. Certain respirators, known as tight-fitting respirators, must form a tight seal with your face to work properly. If your respirator doesn’t fit your face properly, contaminated air can leak into your respirator face piece, and you could breathe in hazardous substances. So before you wear a tight-fitting respirator at work, your employer must be sure that your respirator fits you. Your employer does this by having a fit test performed on you while you wear the same make, model, and size of respirator that you will be using on the job. That way, you know that your respirator fits you properly and can protect you, as long as you use it correctly. For our Fit Test Protocols, we will be using Bitrex, which leaves a bitter taste in your mouth.

Testing:
Step 1: Qualitative fit testing is a pass/fail test method that uses your sense of taste or smell, or your reaction to an irritant in order to detect leakage into the respirator facepiece. Qualitative fit testing does not measure the actual amount of leakage. Whether the respirator passes or fails the test is based simply on you detecting leakage of the test substance (Bitrex) into your face piece with the hood over your head.

Step 2: Complete and bring the OSHA Medical Clearance form, Download here and bring it with you. SSN number is NOT needed on the form. You leave with all the paperwork. We do not keep your Fit Testing record or medical clearance, you will provide to your school or employer.

Step 3: Bring your mask(s) with you, ShowMeCPR does NOT provide masks. You must complete the fit test using a respirator that’s the same make, model, and size as one they will wear on the job

Facial Hair: The Respiratory Protection standard (OSHA), paragraph 29 CFR 1910.134(g)(1)(i)(A), states that respirators shall not be worn when facial hair comes between the sealing surface of the facepiece and the face or that interferes with valve function. Facial hair is allowed as long as it does not protrude under the respirator seal, or extend far enough to interfere with the device's valve function. Short mustaches, sideburns, and small goatees that are neatly trimmed so that no hair compromises the seal of the respirator usually do not present a hazard and, therefore, do not violate paragraph 1910.134(g)(1)(i). ShowMeCPR will NOT fit test anyone who has facial hair that impedes the seal of the mask.
